Don’t TRY To Be Authentic!
What does it mean to be ‘authentic’?
‘Authenticity’ is best explained as being honest, true to others and true to ourselves, & sometimes allowing ourselves to be vulnerable & admitting our own mistakes. Read this great post by Mike Robbins on ‘The Power of Authenticity‘.
Being authentic is overrated
However, in my opinion ‘being authentic’ has become overrated and people are trying too hard to ‘be authentic’. It’s been written about so many times, that it’s gotten boring.
If you’re TRYING to BE anything, you’re not being ‘authentic’
I’ve tried to be someone smarter, tougher, better looking, but it doesn’t work People will always be able to tell that you’re not genuine, that you’re trying too hard. For example: my mother tongue is not English & yes, there are typos in my blog posts & e-mails every now and then. Before I was trying to get each post perfect, but it would take me much longer & I had to count on other people to help with proof-reading. I was trying too hard to be someone that I’m not and that is almost the same as being phony & fake, right?
Authenticity is a big word – just start by being yourself
So stop trying to be authentic, just start with being yourself, admitting your fears, admitting your mistakes. You will see that being comfortable with being who you truly are will set you free !
I’m curious: what does being ‘authentic’ mean to you? Do you have examples of people you follow who are authentic or rather who are being themselves?
